Dear colleagues,
As part of the Center of Innovation and e-Health (CieH-UFMCD), in collaboration with the University of Bucharest, the medical and health humanities team has the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the workshop titled “Cognitive barriers to communicating in medicine. Heuristics, but Smart Heuristics” given by Prof. Univ. Dr. Daniela Dumitru
Overview
Much can block communication. In this workshop we shall refer to cognitive limitations that interfere with good communication. The cognitive system is limited, that includes reasoning. Thinking (with limited resources) under uncertainty poses great challenges to our minds. Over time, our mind developed mechanisms to get to the right choices fast and effortlessly. They are called heuristics. Many communication barriers are caused by mental shortcuts (the heuristics). However, the same mental shortcuts make us understand each other and have good intuitions when little information is available. We shall explain the concepts of heuristics, followed by exercises and practical applications of these concepts in everyday life situations.
Course objectives
- Set a discussion about psychological background of reasoning and its errors
- Introducing the concepts of bounded rationality, two thinking systems and heuristics (Kahneman 2011)
- Proving the value and the downside of heuristics
- Practicing & applying new knowledge
