Space Medicine Core

The Space Medicine Core has the role of initiating and carrying out technological and scientific research and development activities, education and awareness initiatives on the importance of the evolution and development of the space sector. The core set out to develop innovative and entrepreneurial projects to advance and disseminate the creation of new knowledge through which the UMF „Carol Davila” can become an education-research-development hub in the field of Space Medicine.

Activities

  • The Space Medicine Core of UMF „Carol Davila” in Bucharest was born in May 2021, with the organization of the first webinar entitled CHALLENGING THE HUMAN LIMITS - SPACE MEDICINE together with the students of the Society of Medical Students from Bucharest (https://m.facebook .com/events/378764663362583).
  • The second webinar, BEHIND THE APOLLO MISSION, featured a NASA icon, astronaut engineer Jerry Woodfill, who had a life-saving contribution to solving Apollo 11's computer problems during the first moon landing and the explosion of its oxygen tanks Apollo 13 (https://mbasic.facebook.com/ssmb1875/photos/a.529006220467308/4529345283766695/?type=3&source=48)
  • Attended a series of Space Physiology courses, following which members of the research team of the Space Medicine Core were selected
  • The team's first mission was to organize a contest to choose a logo and a name. Thus, the team of young researchers made up mostly of UMFCD students became STAR – Space Aeromedicine Team Romania.

  • STAR organized a session at the ISSMB International Medical Students' Summit of Bucharest (IMSSB) where renowned speakers presented multidisciplinary approaches to the field of Space Medicine:
    • Makito Yurita, PhD, JAXA expert expert;
    • Thais Russomano, MD, MSc, PhD;
    • Dumitru Prunariu - the first Romanian astronaut in space, resident of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA);
    • Marlise Araujo dos Santos, B Pharm, MSc, PhD.

             The discussion was moderated by prof. Dr. Raluca Papacocea, professor of physiology at the „Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

RESULTS

I. EXOLAB is a unique hands-on educational experience of progressive complexity, adapted to study levels, based on hardware consisting of a specialized growth chamber similar to a mini-laboratory on the International Space Station - ISS. This year, ExoLab 9 will study the growth of certain plants under controlled conditions of temperature, humidity, light, CO2, in about 30 laboratories located on all continents, simultaneously with an identical experiment carried out on the ISS. Data transmitted in real time from the ISS is analyzed and compared with data obtained in laboratories on the ground. It is an attractive way for students to learn basic research techniques, work with data sets and investigate how gravity/microgravity affects plants.

Exolab 9 was transported to the ISS on September 29 by Space X-23, which launched the Dragon capsule into orbit, which will connect to the ISS on September 31, so that the start of the experiment will occur for all laboratories on September 1.

II. Qualifying in the final phase of the NASA Apps Space Challenge 2021 competition, participating with the FLIGHT project, a system for growing plants on a foldable structure, through an aeroponic system controlled by artificial intelligence, in a closed environment.

III. Participation in Hackathon4Health Edition 2021 with 2 projects:

  • LiSaLoo - Life Saving Loop (LiSaLo) – an innovative kit for the identification and early intervention in case of a myocardial infarction – coordinator Alfred Stoica
  • Memory Box - a project for the benefit of patients with Alzheimer's disease - coordinator Ana Maria Drăgan

IV. Development of the Space Medicine research laboratory as well as its digital twin (Space Med lab VR Twin)
