The First Space Physiology Thematic Course

When bright minds unite, we become faithful that better days are coming. Decades of ignorance, procrastinating major changes, waiting for a better hero, accepting that „we did what we could”, that there might be a smarter way, but it’s not for us to be found. Superstition, mistrust in science and the fear of uniting with other people. All these have brought us to a dead-end in environmental evolution. The nature screams for our help, the images from awareness campaigns become our reality and we’ve finally reached the point where we know that change is needed.

As a generation that had to adapt constantly for the past twenty years, we believe that we are different. We choose to be the masters of our faith, we refuse to stay passive and we understand that thinking outside the box is the answer.
So we did, and that’s why, with the unswerving support from our professors, our wish to find solutions outside the borders of our planet was made reality.

The Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, through the Innovation and eHealth Centre (CIeH) UMFCD, in collaboration with the Medical Students’ Society of Bucharest (SSMB), honouring the partnership with the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), organised the first Space Physiology Thematic Course in Romania. The lectures take place every Saturday, online, on the e-learning „Moodle” platform, and we are beyond honoured to have by our side Guest Prof. Thais Russomano, MD, MSc, PhD, who delighted us with the most fascinating information about the functioning of the human body in Space.

How does the body adapt to Space? But what about the mind? What instructions are essential when on a Space mission, when will we return on the Moon and when will we first step on Mars? All these and many more curiosities will be broadly discussed during this series. And because active learning was proven to be the most effective method, we will test our acquainted knowledge during short quizzes at the end of each lecture.

After last week’s introductory presentation of the Aerospace Environment, we are highly enthusiastic to discover new dimensions of the life beyond Earth during next Saturday’s lecture. Until then, we remain focused on the same question: „How can we make a better world?” and this time, the sky is not the limit.

At the first session of the course, over 300 students participated live on zoom, and they had lots of questions that Prof. Thasis Russomano was delighted to answer.

The Space Physiology Course is already a huge success, as 500 students registered in our University’s Moodle platform edu.umfcd.ro to take the course.
